Who we are

An operating holding company.

Kalyx comes from calyx — the case that holds a flower before it opens. It doesn’t grow the flower; it holds the conditions that let it. That distinction is the job.

Why we exist

Most businesses that stall don’t stall on the product. They stall on execution: the wrong buyer, a price built backwards, a listing with nobody in the aisle behind it.

Those problems are rarely solved with money alone, and almost never solved from a board seat. They’re solved by someone who has done the work before and is willing to do it again.

That is what we bring, and what we take a position for.

It is also where we stop. A calyx that tried to be the flower would kill it. We take a defined part of a business, make the conditions in it right, and leave the rest to the people who built it.

How we’re built

  • Operator-led — everyone involved has run a business, not just financed one
  • No outside fund, therefore no fund cycle and no exit deadline
  • No sector thesis: we go where we have already solved the problem
  • Based in Paris, working across Europe
What we believe

Six commitments you can hold us to.

Values are worth writing down only when someone can tell whether you kept them. These are all observable from the outside.

A straight answer, including no

Every serious message gets a real answer. Most of those answers are no, and they arrive quickly, with a reason. A slow maybe costs a founder more than a fast no, and we have been on the receiving end of enough of them to know.

Inside the business, not above it

Board seats change very little. Weeks spent with the pipeline, the margins and the customers change a great deal. We take the second job, which is why we can only hold a few at a time.

Only where we have done it

We have no sector thesis and no ambition to acquire one on your time. If the gap isn't something we have closed before, we say so at the first conversation rather than learn at your expense.

The work before the money

Capital is the easiest thing to hand over and the easiest to measure, which is why most partners lead with it. We lead with the work, and bring money to the part of the plan that genuinely needs it.

Our own clock

No outside fund means no fund cycle, no exit deadline, and nobody to perform for at quarter end. We answer to ourselves, which means we can take the slow route whenever the slow route is the right one.

Plain language

Terms written in one document that both sides can read without a lawyer for the first draft. Four lines beat forty slides, in the first message and in every one after it.

The team

Small on purpose.

We hold few businesses at a time because the method does not survive being spread thin. The team grows around a project when the project needs it, and not before.

Aymeric Karahasan

Founder

Commercial and brand roles at JUUL, LemonAid and Colgate-Palmolive, then years as an international sales agent for European manufacturers — which is where the habit came from: anyone can get a meeting, almost nobody can get a reorder.

Two market launches led. Since then, four businesses built alongside their teams.

Why the team stays this size

A perimeter you have to answer for cannot be held at arm’s length, and there are only so many of those one person can carry at once. We would rather turn work down than hold it badly.
